Game Day: Saturday, October 27, 2018

Field status update (Sat. @ 6:45 AM):  Metro North Park is open, so our games are on as scheduled.

Game day notes

  • Field location:  We’re at the Metro North Park TOPS field.
  • Chilly morning?  The early weather forecast predicts a chilly morning (mid-40s). Girls in the 9 AM game may want to wear more than the usual uniform. Link:  cold weather attire
  • Weekly quiz:  We post a quiz each week below the team assignments. Scroll past the roster table for quiz details.
  • Warm-up captains:  Girls whose names are in bold print with a (C) indicator are warm-up captains. They are responsible for gathering their teammates and starting pre-game warm-up. Games will be going on on one half of the Metro North TOPS field. Teams waiting to play can warm-up on the other half of the TOPS field. Link:  warm-up ideas

Saturday team assignments and schedules

We have larger than usual rosters this game day. Everyone will still get to play at least half their game, but it won’t be the usual 3/4 of each game.

Weekly quiz — 1v1 defending

Girls can win a treat after our Wednesday or Thursday practice if they can demonstrate proper 1v1 defending technique, and also answer these questions about 1v1 defending.

  1. When an opponent has the ball, should you run away from her toward your own goal? Or should you stand and wait for her to come toward you? Or should you shut down the space between you and her?
  2. When is the best time to shut down space between you and an opponent who has the ball? After she gets a head start, or as soon as possible so she can’t get a head start?
  3. What’s the best way to shut down space? Run in like a crazed banshee? Stand and watch like a used potato? Run in fast to slow, and high to low so you can change direction if needed to stay between the opponent and our goal?
  4. When should you try to win the ball? Right now? Never? Or stay goal-side and be patient, and wait until the opponent makes a mistake and loses control of the ball?
