Double-Header (DH) play

Our player pool is usually sized to cover game days that have a specific number of games. There are some game days when our schedule has extra games. For those game days, we’ll usually have some girls play twice, or what we call “DH” (double-header”) duty.

How do we select DH players?

In some cases, we’ll assign the DH players based on the specific match-up — we may need younger, less experienced players, or we may need older, more experienced players. In some cases, we’ll select a player for an extra game who may have missed an earlier game due to injury or illness. In some cases, it’s a reward for a player who is consistently working hard and improving at practice. And in some cases, we just ask for volunteers.

Calling for DH volunteers:

If we’re looking for volunteers, we’ll post a request for volunteers at the top of our web site’s News section, normally the weekend before the games. We usually remove the request as soon as we get enough volunteers, which typically happens by Sunday night or Monday afternoon.

Why not post the “call for volunteers” earlier?

  • We usually don’t receive final confirmation of exact game schedules until 7-10 days before games, so we don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up in case our schedule changes and we don’t need “DH” girls.

What if too many girls volunteers?

  • DH requests are often over-subscribed. If so, we try to balance DH play. But harder working players will get more DH chances than players who have to be frequently reminded to give their best effort.
